Who I am
I have been a university professor and clinical psychologist in private practice since 1988. As a full professor at the University of Ottawa (1988-2007), I taught graduate courses and supervised the clinical training of hundreds of doctoral level clinical psychology students. My research during this time focused on the associations among depression, childhood trauma, including sexual abuse, and troubled relationships. I published more than 50 research papers and chapters in edited books, and I co-edited an academic book, Attachment Processes in Couple and Family Therapy, which brought together relationship researchers interested in treating distressed couples and families. In 2006, I published a book for women who experience depression, A Secret Sadness: The Hidden Relationship Patterns that Make Women Depressed. In this book, I summarize the research literature on women’s depression and lay out a treatment plan which guides my clinical work. Since 2007, I have been in private practice in West Vancouver and Sechelt, BC, where I treat individuals who experience depression and PTSD, as well as couples struggling with conflict, lack of intimacy and infidelity.
