Individual Therapy

I provide interpersonal psychotherapy (IPT) to men and women, or their partners, who are suffering from depression and postpartum depression. Twenty years of experience with depression, both as a researcher and as a psychotherapist, has convinced me that depression is strongly linked to problems in close relationships. Depressed clients tell me that they feel needy, criticized, rejected, unloved or overlooked in their relationships with their children, romantic partners, spouses, friends or parents. They have difficulty expressing their feelings and getting their needs met in these relationships. Clients with depressed partners tell me they feel burdened by their partner's depression and that they don't know how to help. Together, we try to change problematic relationships and/or my clients' perceptions of them so that relationships work better and clients feel better.

Three-quarters of the clients who complete therapy with me report that they are no longer depressed and that their relationships have significantly improved.

I charge $160 per one-hour session of individual therapy.

Couple Therapy

Emotion-focused therapy (or EFT) is a highly effective treatment for marital problems. I work with couples who are dissatisfied or fighting because of problems with communication, intimacy, infidelity or a partner's depression. At the beginning of treatment, these men and women tell me that they want a close relationship, but don't know how to achieve it. Often one partner feels angry and emotionally needy, while the other seems disconnected from the relationship. Sometimes both partners feel disconnected. Together, we work to change the relationship so that both partners feel more secure in the relationship, and they are better able to communicate about their emotional needs.

Three-quarters of the couples who complete couple therapy with me report that their relationship has improved significantly and that they feel closer and are better able to express emotional needs to one another.

Couple sessions cost $160 per hour. Sessions range from 60 to 75 minutes, depending on the issues addressed.
